Repetitive Stress Injuries and Technology

What you think is just a nagging sore neck or shoulder is really a repetitive stress injury. Human beings were not intended to sit behind a desk or steering wheel 8-10 hours a day. We are not supposed to be looking down all the time when walking (ie. cell phone in hand). Health care providers, physical therapists and massage therapists are seeing a rise in repetitive stress injuries especially forward head posture or Tech neck.

Did you know that tilting your head 15 degrees to look at that cell phone puts 27 pounds of pressure on your spine, 30-degree neck tilt equals 40 pounds of pressure. No wonder why we all have headaches, neck pain, and shoulder pain.  By moving your 12lb head 3 inches forward from center line causes the cervical extensors (semispinalis, splenii, longissimus, upper traps, etc.) to isometrically hold up 42 pounds against the force of gravity. That is a lot of work for those muscles to have to do for hours on end.

Do you want to avoid looking like the hunchback of Notre Dame?  Do you want to be rid of the stiff neck and headaches? We can’t get away from technology but we can avoid the pitfalls. Massage, exercise and practicing good posture can help to avoid and eliminate forward head posture/Tech Neck.
